WVU Extension Service Remembers Mark Doty
The WVU Extension Service faculty and staff are deeply saddened by the death this morning of Mark Doty, who was the leader of the WVU Fire Service Extension. We offer our condolences to Mark’s family.
“Mark was dedicated to the WVU Fire Service Extension and to West Virginia firefighters,” said Steve Bonanno, interim director of the WVU Extension Service. “He put our WVU Extension Fire Training program on the map, helping us to gain statewide and national recognition. He was well regarded and respected by his peers in the firefighter and emergency responder communities.”
When Doty started with WVU, the program taught about 2,000 firefighters each year. Under his leadership, WVU Fire Service Extension instructors have taught more than 18,000 fire fighters already this year.
Mark was also instrumental in the development and the growth of the organization’s annual Junior Fire Fighter camp, which provides early career and leadership training for young people. It attracts youth from across the nation to come to the State Fire Training Academy at Jackson’s Mill each summer. Some of his innovative program development work also included trainings for oil and gas workers and for military personnel.
“Mark’s legacy lives on in the thousands of people he’s trained and the communities that benefit from their services,” Bonanno said. “Hundreds of youth have been inspired and trained to become the next generation of firefighters because of Mark.”
“When the time is right, our faculty and staff will work with the firefighter community to appropriately honor Mark’s life and achievements,” said Bonanno.
“We are working to continue our commitments for future trainings,” Bonanno said. Questions about upcoming trainings can be directed to the Fire Service staff at 304-269-0875.
